Expert Advice, Outdoor & Adventure

Washington is a great group travel destination. Discover a few of the top outdoor activities in Washington and why you should take advantage of them this summer.

Washington State is a prime travel hot spot no matter what time of year you choose to go. From its breathtaking sights to exquisite food and energetic nightlife, there’s always something to do and enjoy during your stay. However, it’s in the summer that this state truly comes alive, and traveling there at this time can bring a unique range of experiences for all. These are some of the top outdoor activities in Washington and how you can partake in them this summer.

Hiking and Rock Climbing in Washington

If you like to work up a sweat and surround yourself with nature, Washington has just what you’re looking for. With several lush forests—including the Quinault Rain Forest—and large mountains to scale, this area is a dream for anyone who loves to hike or rock climb. Olympic National Park even has a series of trails at varying difficulties. So, you’ll be sure to find something that meets your current skill level.

White Water Rafting

White water rafting is also something for which Washington is known. Whether you’re traveling with your family or a group of friends, several rivers provide the perfect conditions for your needs. As such, you can partake in this activity with anyone, regardless of their—or your—experience. For more adventurous hearts, the Skykomish and Sauk Rivers are particularly effective at providing some much-needed excitement.

Swimming

Another of the top outdoor activities in Washington is swimming along one of the state’s many beautiful beaches. These sandy coasts on the Pacific boast cool waters and awesome views, and they make the perfect place for seashell hunting. Because of this, they’re very popular spots for relaxing in the sun and enjoying the sea.

Whale Watching

You can watch for whales on Washington’s beaches as well. Between mid-June and early September, orcas and humpback whales will move through the area as part of their migration pattern. This greatly increases your chances of seeing them breach the surface. It’s a very unique experience that few other places have the ability to provide.
