Outdoor & Adventure

Montana’s Kandahar Lodge at Whitefish Mountain Resort offers a ski-in location and is close to Glacier National Park

Since 1947, Whitefish Mountain Resort has welcomed skiers and riders seeking a mountain that is uncrowded, naturally appealing and affordable. Rising above the town of Whitefish in the back yard of Glacier National Park (only 35 miles away), the resort’s Kandahar Lodge will charm you with a friendly and fun-loving vibe, variety of ski-able terrain and virtually no lift lines—all at a great value. Whitefish Mountain Resort is the quintessential skier’s mountain and perfect for your next skiing adventure.

Winter temperatures are balmier than most people expect for how far north Whitefish is located. Because the Whitefish area is located on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains, its weather generally comes from the West Coast rather than from the north.

What does the lodge have to offer?

Offering the height of convenience with its ski-in/ski-out location, this intimate European-style lodge provides luxurious hotel rooms and suites perfect for relaxing after a long day of carving powder. Refuel at the lodge’s gourmet restaurant and relax with a selection from its extensive wine list.

Other amenities include the fully-licensed Snug Bar, a group-sized outdoor hot tub, a comfortable lobby with a wood-burning fireplace, a steam room, exercise room, massage treatment room and heated boot room. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the lodge. For convenient dining, there’s the in-house Café Kandahar, owned by award-winning chef Andy Blanton.

For corporate groups, Kandahar Lodge can host small corporate meetings or board retreats and arrange for on-site catering. Audio and video rental equipment is also available. The Northern Lights Conference Room has a capacity of 50 people and is 800 square feet. The Boardroom can fit 12 people and spans 250 square feet.

If you have extra time on your hands, Kandahar can offer a two-nation vacation. Fernie, British Columbia is only two hours north of Whitefish. Ski groups often do day trips to Fernie or split a week between Fernie and Whitefish. Kandahar Lodge is not just another Whitefish hotel, indulge yourself.

How do I get to Kandahar Lodge?

Kandahar Lodge, located on Big Mountain Road, is just 30 minutes from Glacier Park International Airport (FCA), which offers direct flights from Denver, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, Las Vegas and Seattle. Van or bus shuttles are prearranged for groups for a fee.

What can I do off the slopes?

Within walking distance of Kandahar Lodge are a few shops, restaurants and bars for après ski in the village area. The S.N.O.W. bus is a free shuttle to and from Whitefish. The non-resort town offers excellent dining options, bars (some featuring live music), a railroad museum, art galleries, a variety of shopping, and cinema and live theater.

For non-skiers or alternative activities, options include snowmobiling, cross country skiing, guided cross country or snowshoe trips into Glacier National Park, dog sledding, fat-tire mountain biking, snow cat skiing, sleigh rides and sleigh ride dinners. Other recreation includes The Wave Aquatic & Fitness Center and Stumptown Ice Den for ice skating and hockey.
