go-today specializes in tailor-made multi-city and multi-country itineraries around the world, many of which can be best experienced during the holidays
Where can you find a more traditional Christmas than exploring the famous Christkindlmarkts of Germany? These festive markets held in numerous German cities are the quintessential holiday experience. Shop for ornaments and advent calendars while listening to the sounds of traditional carols and brass bands. Keep warm while sipping traditional gluhwein, mulled wine and eating hot bratwurst.
For dessert nibble on lebkuchen, traditional German gingerbread as you take in the lights and snow covered stalls filled with Christmas cheer.
Ringing in the New Year is an exciting time filled with parties, fireworks, friends and family. Most countries around the world have unique ways of celebrating New Year’s Eve which makes it a great time to travel abroad with a group of friends or family to experience a new culture! It’s always a party in Spain with the country’s many tapas bars and flamenco shows, but particularly at New Year’s where it’s traditional to eat a grape for each toll of the clock striking midnight to bring luck and happiness for the next twelve months of the year. Peruvians take the tradition one step further and insist on eating a 13th grape just in case, though anyone fortunate enough to live in a country with such beautiful mountains, handicrafts and interesting Incan heritage probably doesn’t need to hedge their bets.
In Japan enjoy the 108 tolls of temple bells at midnight, part of a traditional legend, and laugh with your travel companions as the Japanese believe laughing will bring good luck for the year. Then drink spiced sake on New Year’s Day while eating holiday delicacies. Scotland goes full out to celebrate the new year with Hogmanay, which includes midnight torchlight parades, fireball swinging and bonfires, games and Scottish dancing. Over in the Netherlands, the Dutch have a clever way to dispose of their Christmas trees. Instead of leaving them curbside for trash pickup, the Dutch turn it into a party by burning bonfires of Christmas trees on New Year’s Eve. Warm yourself in front of the bonfires while enjoying the New Year’s firework displays and snacking on Olie Bollen, small round Dutch donuts, the circular shape signifying the cycle of the year. No matter where in the world your group would like to spend their new year’s holiday, you are guaranteed to enjoy your time celebrating and experiencing new traditions and celebrations!
Two excellent locations to celebrate Valentine’s Day are France and Belgium. Few cities in the world can compete with the romance of Paris. Hold hands while strolling along the Seine, admire world class art, and then admire each other at a fine French restaurant over a glass of champagne. Since chocolates are a tradition on this sweetest of holidays, Belgium is the place to go. Just a stone’s throw from the Grand Place in Brussels is the Chocolate and Cocoa Museum. Learn the history of this intoxicating food, how cocoa is grown and the process that turns cocoa into pleasurable treats. As you explore the sights of Brussels including the Margritte Museum, the Mannekin Pis and the Begijnhof, pop in to any of the chocolate shops lining the streets to try out the many varieties and discover your favorite.
Why not travel to Italy over Easter week? In virtually every city in Italy there are large processions and special services held in all the cathedrals. On Good Friday, the Pope celebrates the Stations of the Cross near the Colosseum. In Chieti in Abruzzo there is a Good Friday procession through the streets with 100 violins playing Selecchi’s Miserere. In Florence, a large decorated wagon with white oxen is pulled through the streets until it reaches the Basilica in the historical center. After the archbishop says mass, a rocket ignites the fireworks held in the cart and there is a parade in the streets with medieval costumes. Enjoy traditional Easter foods such as lamb or goat, artichokes and special breads. Easter Monday is a day to gather with family and friends and there are many festivities in town such as games, concerts, dances, and even a cheese contest in Panicale in Umbria.
