Going from the east coast to the west coast or vice versa is the best way to see the beauty of America. Plan ahead for a trip you will never forget.

Road trips are a great way to unwind, forget about work and responsibilities, and see our beautiful country. Coast-to-coast road trips require time and planning, but they’re also well worth it. Here are a few tips for planning a coast-to-coast road trip to get you ready to hit the road.

Map It Out

Spontaneity is an excellent quality to have, and those of us with the gift can’t fathom a tight schedule. After all, you never know when a surprising site might pop up that you have to stop to see it. I mean, really, you know you can’t resist the world’s largest ball of string. Still, it’s best to have something of a plan before you begin. Give yourself an idea of how things will go and, at the same time, remain flexible.

Check out a map, and calculate approximately how many miles you’d like to travel in a day. Chances are, you’re planning the road trip so that you can see the country, not just see how fast you can get across it. Get an idea of where you’ll need to be each day to find a place to rest. Book hotels ahead of time if that makes you more comfortable than just winging it.

Maintenance

Don’t take off without knowing your car is safe and ready to trek all over the country with you. A fresh oil change and clean filters are a must. Pay attention to your brakes to see how they are feeling. If you aren’t sure you would know if brake pads are wearing thin—or if any area on your car remains a mystery—then have a mechanic do a thorough check before you go. You don’t want to be on the road and suddenly find out your brakes will only make it from California to Utah.

Entertainment and Snacks

Is a road trip truly a road trip without your favorite snacks and music? Probably not. Both are a sure bet to get you through any stretch of monotonous landscape. Get your music list loaded and ready. Driving thousands of miles with the windows down and music playing is sure to rejuvenate the soul and put a permanent smile on your face. Snacks are a must to avoid stopping too often for gas station donuts (not that there’s anything wrong with that!). Have your must-haves right next to your seat for when the need arises.

Finally, take off and enjoy the ride! Add your own ideas to these tips for planning a coast-to-coast road trip, and travel safely!
