Day 1: Visit a Picturesque Island

Midday:

Begin your trip with a visit to Put-In-Bay on South Bass Island in western Lake Erie. This popular resort village is often called the “Key West of the North,” and sits about 3 miles off the Ohio mainland and is famous for its vibrant nightlife, historic sites, outdoor recreation, and primary transport by golf cart. Put-In-Bay is especially group-friendly because the island experience itself becomes part of the tour, while the logistics are well suited to motorcoach groups. Groups can leave the coach on the mainland, where both Miller Ferry and Jet Express offer free motorcoach parking. Miller Ferry also provides dockside passenger/luggage drop-off and reserved group departure times, while Jet Express delivers passengers directly downtown. The narrated Put-In-Bay Tour Train provides a 55-minute overview with stops at major attractions, and group rates are available for tour groups. Among the area’s signature experiences include: Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial, Heineman’s Winery and Crystal Cave, Perry’s Cave, museums, nature experiences, shopping and dining, which can all be incorporated into a single island day.



Afternoon:

Enjoy a lovely drive to Marblehead Lighthouse State Park in Marblehead. The Marblehead Lighthouse is one of Lake Erie’s best known and most-photographed landmarks. It is the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse during the summer season for spectacular views of the lake and its islands in the distance. This is a strong group stop because it combines iconic Lake Erie scenery, history, and a memorable photo opportunity in an easy-to-understand experience. Groups can explore the lighthouse grounds, learn about one of the region’s most recognizable landmarks, and enjoy panoramic views of Lake Erie, Sandusky Bay, and nearby islands.



Evening:

After checking into your hotel, enjoy dinner at The Orchard, located near Marblehead Lighthouse. Surrounded by orchards, vineyards, and landscaped grounds, The Orchard provides groups with a distinctive Lake Erie dining experience in a scenic setting.



Day 1 Alternative:

Another option is to visit the Rutherford B Hayes Presidential Library & Museum in Fremont. This library is ideal for groups because it brings presidential history to life in one walkable, immersive setting. At the 25-acre Spiegel Grove estate, groups can tour the 31-room Hayes Home, explore museum exhibits and the presidential library, and visit the final resting place of President Rutherford B. Hayes and First Lady Lucy Hayes.

Evening:

For dinner, visit Firelands Winery, which combines local flavor, dining, and the Lake Erie wine experience in one convenient location. With ample seating to accommodate groups and private dining options, it provides a comfortable setting for groups to enjoy a meal, sample locally produced wines, and browse the gift shop.



Morning:

Located on a scenic Lake Erie peninsula in Sandusky, Ohio, Cedar Point is a 364-acre historic amusement park. Opened in 1870, it features 18 world-class roller coasters, including Millennium Force and Steel Vengeance, alongside the adjacent Cedar Point Shores Waterpark and on-site resort hotels. Cedar Point works well for group travel because it combines a major, recognizable attraction with built-in flexibility for travelers with different interests. Groups can spend a full day in one destination, with thrill rides and roller coasters, live entertainment, dining, shopping, and Lake Erie waterfront views all within the park.



Afternoon:

Another option is the Maritime Museum of Sandusky. Travel back in time to the days of passenger boats, commercial fishing, and ice harvesting on Lake Erie. Learn about boat-building, Ohio’s wetlands, shipwrecks, and Sandusky’s role in the Underground Railroad. Explore the rest of the museum’s campus, including the Howman Boathouse and the Motor & Engine Room. You can board Lyman boats, view other vessels on display, or see what’s in work in its boat building school and restoration workshop. This is a great group stop because it shares Lake Erie’s rich maritime story in an engaging, manageable museum experience.



Day 2 Alternative:

The Merry-Go-Round Museum in Sandusky is a fantastic group stop because it offers a nostalgic, interactive experience that appeals to a wide range of ages and interests. Groups can discover the history and artistry of the carousel, see skilled artisans demonstrate traditional carving techniques, admire beautifully restored carousel figures, and enjoy a ride on the museum’s working carousel.

Morning:

Start your day with a visit to the spectacular African Safari Wildlife Park. For more than 50 years, families have enjoyed this Drive-Thru Safari, feeding giraffes, zebras, bison, deer and other incredible animals right from their vehicles. One cup of grain per vehicle is included with admission. Guests can also explore the seasonal Walk-Thru Safari, meet even more animals and enjoy interactive experiences and educational programs. This park is group-friendly because it offers a unique, interactive wildlife experience that’s easy to incorporate into a motorcoach itinerary. Groups can see exotic animals such as giraffes, zebras, and bison up close.



How much advance planning is needed for the ferry, island attractions and group dining reservations?

For a motorcoach group, advance coordination is important, particularly during the busy spring, summer and fall seasons. Miller Ferry asks motorcoach and tour groups to register and coordinate arrival and departure times with its group coordinator. The ferry offers reserved departure times, free motorcoach parking and complimentary passage for the driver and tour guide. Groups of 20 or more also qualify for group fares.


