A History of Talent at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre

Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre celebrated its 50th Anniversary Season in 2023, having opened on March 2, 1973. The theatre was part of a small string of dinner theatres with the same name built by J. Scott Talbott for his theatre-loving daughter, with other locations in Ohio and Kentucky.

Opening with the show Tom Jones, audiences were immediately hooked. After seeing the preview performance, the Indianapolis Star’s drama critic Corbin Patrick declared the “sparkling” theatre had “served notice that it will be a formidable contender among the city’s fun places.” While continuing with plays and musicals, Beef & Boards would go on to present performances from incredible stars including B.B. King, The Smothers Brothers, Tony Bennett, The Temptations, Donny and Marie Osmond, Chubby Checker, Carol Channing, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Frankie Valli, and even Tina Turner, just to name a few. These concerts primarily took place during the 1980s. When large concert venues began to emerge in the area, Beef & Boards shifted its focus to primarily Broadway musical productions – and that emphasis endures to this day.

The Indianapolis location of Beef & Boards is the sole remaining dinner theatre from that original chain, and it continues to live up to its sparkling reputation. Since that opening day in 1973, Beef & Boards has welcomed over 6.5 million people eager for unforgettable entertainment, and is projected to welcome its 7 millionth guest in 2026. Locally owned and operated, the theatre offers a variety of shows to its audiences each season, building on its history of quality, year-round entertainment.
