Tour groups, which are increasingly recognizing the importance of accessible travel, are working to make their offerings more inclusive. They try to provide accessible transportation options, such as wheelchair-accessible vans and buses. They work closely with hotels and attractions to ensure that experiences are open to all guests. Additionally, many tour groups employ trained staff who are knowledgeable about accessibility issues and can provide support to travelers with disabilities.

This is where Virginia comes in—the Commonwealth is a leader in accessible travel, striving to activate its diverse landscapes and rich history to all. From the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains to historic coastal towns, the state boasts a wide range of destinations, including national parks with boardwalks and accessible trails, museums with audio tours and ramps, and beaches stocked with beach wheelchairs. And Virginia’s commitment to accessibility extends beyond attractions, with a robust network of accessible transportation options, including public transportation and accessible taxis. This dedication to inclusivity makes Virginia an exceptional destination for travelers with disabilities, ensuring a memorable and enriching travel experience.

If you want to experience life in the early days of America or enjoy a stroll along the wheelchair-friendly boardwalk of the world’s longest resort beach; if your dream itinerary includes trips to ADA-compliant museums and hikes along paved paths where waterfowl flock; if your goal is to touch replicas of historic artifacts—come to beautiful Virginia. You will not be disappointed.

Here are five Virginia destinations that are going beyond ADA compliance and prioritizing top-notch disability-friendly travel, plus group travel tips for inclusive adventures.

Top Accessible Destinations

Loudoun, VA

Visit Loudoun set out to develop a program that helps industry partners better

understand what it means to be truly welcoming to people of all abilities, both visible and invisible. After reviewing proposals, Visit Loudoun awarded funding to the Arc of Loudoun to launch the “You Belong Here” Disability Awareness and Accessibility Training. This two-hour session helps businesses and their staff identify, understand and address the barriers that individuals with various disabilities may face when shopping, staying, or visiting. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate and a window cling, signaling their commitment to inclusion.

As part of the program, businesses also receive sensory kits curated by Visit Loudoun. These kits include items such as fidget toys, non-verbal communication cards, and noise-canceling headphones to enhance the experience for all guests.

Richmond, Virginia

In 2021, Richmond Region Tourism, which promotes Richmond along with six neighboring jurisdictions, established a dedicated focus on accessibility to ensure inclusive and welcoming experiences for all visitors. In collaboration with Visit Able, the organization offers free disability inclusion and awareness training for local hospitality businesses. To date, roughly 1,800 hospitality employees have completed the program, helping to create a more accessible travel experience throughout the region. Richmond’s commitment to inclusivity is further highlighted by its role as the host city for the 2025 Adult and Junior Division Wheelchair Basketball National Tournaments, an event it also proudly welcomed last year.

Fairfax County, VA

Fairfax County has likewise put in lots of effort to make its attractions and amenities accessible—and one of the most impressive results is its long list of wheelchair-friendly destinations that make exploring the area both easy and enjoyable.

One prime example is the National Museum of the United States Army, a standout attraction with multiple companion-care restrooms, an accessible seating area in its on-site theater, and interactive exhibits designed for people with limited mobility, including hand controls for those who cannot reach screens. Similarly, at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, visitors can explore the lower level of the historic estate with ease, since it is fully wheelchair accessible. The surrounding gardens feature smooth, paved pathways. And in the town of Vienna, located in Fairfax County, travelers using wheelchairs can navigate historic Church Street and its many shops thanks to well-maintained sidewalks and smooth curb cuts at street crossings.

But this area’s commitment to accessibility doesn’t end there. The company has also enhanced accessibility with stone dust parking, pathways, and a portable toilet for visitors with mobility needs.
