Visit Loudoun set out to develop a program that helps industry partners better
understand what it means to be truly welcoming to people of all abilities, both visible and invisible. After reviewing proposals, Visit Loudoun awarded funding to the Arc of Loudoun to launch the “You Belong Here” Disability Awareness and Accessibility Training. This two-hour session helps businesses and their staff identify, understand and address the barriers that individuals with various disabilities may face when shopping, staying, or visiting. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate and a window cling, signaling their commitment to inclusion.
As part of the program, businesses also receive sensory kits curated by Visit Loudoun. These kits include items such as fidget toys, non-verbal communication cards, and noise-canceling headphones to enhance the experience for all guests.
Richmond, Virginia
In 2021, Richmond Region Tourism, which promotes Richmond along with six neighboring jurisdictions, established a dedicated focus on accessibility to ensure inclusive and welcoming experiences for all visitors. In collaboration with Visit Able, the organization offers free disability inclusion and awareness training for local hospitality businesses. To date, roughly 1,800 hospitality employees have completed the program, helping to create a more accessible travel experience throughout the region. Richmond’s commitment to inclusivity is further highlighted by its role as the host city for the 2025 Adult and Junior Division Wheelchair Basketball National Tournaments, an event it also proudly welcomed last year.
Fairfax County, VA
Fairfax County has likewise put in lots of effort to make its attractions and amenities accessible—and one of the most impressive results is its long list of wheelchair-friendly destinations that make exploring the area both easy and enjoyable.
