A Walk Through History
In the late 1800s, Fort Myers was a sleepy town with under 350 residents. Thomas Edison traveled here seeking a warm weather retreat from the northern winters and purchased a 13.5-acre plot along the river in 1885. By the next year, he had completed what became known as Seminole Lodge, a winter sanctuary where his new bride could relax and he could work on experiments.
Edison’s close friend, Henry Ford, visited here and was also captivated by the location. In 1916, Ford acquired the neighboring property, The Mangoes, further cementing their winter residency in Fort Myers.
Restoration and Preservation
Recognizing the historical significance of these estates, the preservation society has meticulously maintained the grounds and all of the historic structures have been restored to the 1929 time period. Thanks to ongoing fundraising efforts, this restoration ensures that visitors can experience the buildings and landscape much as Edison and Ford did in their time.
