Located in Minato City, one of Tokyo’s most historically rich districts, Shiba Park Hotel Tokyo, sister location of Park Hotel Tokyo, offers far more than a convenient place to stay.
Blending heritage, curated knowledge, and hands-on cultural experiences, the hotel has redefined itself as one of Japan’s most thoughtful Library Hotels, appealing to travelers seeking meaningful cultural immersion.
Just steps from Shiba Park and within walking distance of Tokyo Tower, the hotel serves as a gateway to both Tokyo’s past and its evolving creative future.
A Historic District with Deep Cultural Roots
The story of Shiba Park Hotel begins long before its official opening in 1948.
During the Edo Period (1603–1868), the Shiba area was a prominent cultural and religious center, anchored by Zojo-ji Temple, the family temple of the Tokugawa clan, who ruled Japan for over 250 years. The land where the hotel now stands was once home to a Buddhist school, where students studied and practiced religious teachings—establishing the site as a place of learning long before it became a hotel.
Following World War II, the area took on a new role. When the General Headquarters of the Allied Forces (GHQ) relocated from Yokohama to Hibiya, they selected the Kyoritsu Women’s Professional School of Pharmacy dormitory in Shiba Park to house personnel. This building would later evolve into what officially opened as Shiba Park Hotel in 1948.

The Library Hotel Concept: Past, Present, and Future
During its major renovation in 2020, Shiba Park Hotel embraced its academic and cultural legacy by transforming into a Library Hotel in Tokyo, designed around the idea that learning connects people across time.
The hotel now houses a carefully selected curated collection of over 1,500 books. The collection explores themes tied to Shiba district history, Japanese culture, art, travel, craftsmanship, and the future of society as a whole.
One of the hotel’s most striking features is its central staircase, where books are displayed vertically in chronological order—past at the base, present in the middle, and future at the top. This visual storytelling reinforces the hotel’s philosophy that by understanding history and culture, we can move toward a brighter shared future.
Guests can also receive Omotenashi-style concierge book recommendations, offering both Japanese and international titles tailored to individual interests. Many of the books offered are in English, so there should be no issue sitting down in their lounge to relax and read.
Cultural Experiences at Shiba Park Hotel
Kintsugi Workshop: Finding Beauty in Imperfection
One of the hotel’s most distinctive offerings is the Shiba Park Hotel Kintsugi workshop, a hands-on artisan experience rooted in traditional Japanese philosophy.
Kintsugi is the art of repairing broken ceramics using lacquer and metal powders—traditionally gold—embracing imperfections rather than hiding them. The hotel’s beginner-friendly workshop uses synthetic lacquer and brass powder, making it accessible to first-time participants while still honoring the craft’s symbolism.
The experience lasts about one hour and offers travelers a meaningful way to engage with Japanese culture through creativity and reflection. While during my stay, I didn’t participate in this, I can only assume, given the hospitality and welcoming I received, that the class would be top-notch.
Tea Ceremony & Artisan Exhibitions
In addition to Kintsugi, guests can enjoy a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, held every Thursday and on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month in the main lobby. This complimentary experience allows visitors to observe and learn about tea ceremony etiquette while soaking in the serene atmosphere.
The hotel also hosts rotating “Tale of Artisans” exhibitions, showcasing Japanese craftsmanship and creative traditions. These exhibits change periodically, encouraging repeat visits and deeper cultural discovery.

What Staying at a Library Hotel Feels Like
Staying at Shiba Park Hotel feels calm, intentional, and luxurious. The library lounge and foyer provide peaceful spaces for reading and relaxing, complemented by complimentary tea and coffee. There are also optional paid alcoholic beverages you can purchase in the lobby.
One important aspect of the library is that the books and artworks displayed throughout are not just for viewing, but can also be purchased and brought home. Everything is for sale, so if you find a piece of art that speaks to you, there’s no need to leave it behind once you return home.
For travelers who value thoughtful design and cultural depth, the hotel offers an atmosphere unlike any other.

Rooms, Amenities, and Sustainable Comfort
Shiba Park Hotel offers a wide variety of room types, accommodating solo travelers, couples, and families.
Guests can choose between:
- Traditional Japanese-style rooms featuring tatami areas for relaxing together
- Western-style rooms with larger beds and more open layouts
Compared to the average hotel room in Tokyo, many of the rooms at Shiba Park Hotel are notably spacious, depending on the category and bed size selected. There were no issues with luggage space or feeling like you need to crawl around your belongings to get around.
Amenities include:
- Soaps, lotions, razors, bath salts, cosmetic sets
- Tea and in-room comforts
- Environmentally conscious products made from bamboo and sustainable materials
Sustainability is a key part of the hotel’s philosophy, with efforts focused on reducing plastic waste by offering items made and packaged from bamboo. While meant to be degradable and disposed of once used, the items were high quality products and a good substitute in case you forgot anything.
The hotel also features “The Dining” on it’s first floor: a restaurant designed to cater for many palettes and dietary needs. For dinner guests can choose between Japanese, Western, or Chinese Cuisine, with vegan-friendly options available as well. This environment allows for a stress free meal where everyone can leave happy. This also applies to the breakfast buffet as well, with the three cuisine types available to choose from.
