Ireland’s Cities, Castles & Cliffs

On this 12-day trip, uncover Ireland’s soul on a magical journey from the vibrant cities of Dublin, Belfast and Cork to the windswept cliffs of the Wild Atlantic Way, where music, myths and timeless landscapes await.

Goway travelers start their adventure in Dublin, famed for its cobbled charm and literary legacy. Your hotel, the Leonardo Hotel Dublin Parnell Street, is just minutes from historic O’Connell Street, a pulsing center of activity with landmarks like the General Post Office building and a range of monuments and statues relating to Irish heritage. The hotel is less than a five-minute walk to Henry Street shopping and Ilac Centre mall.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.

Your first full day in Dublin begins at Dublin Castle, which hosts state receptions and presidential inaugurations. Its state apartments, chapel and heritage center offer fascinating insights into Irish history. Next, visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral, built in honor of Ireland’s patron saint. Dating back to 1220, the stunning Gothic cathedral is the largest in Ireland and has impressive funeral monuments, stained-glass windows and the tomb of Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels. At an elegant afternoon tea in a luxury hotel, enjoy fine teas and pastries.

Highlights in Belfast include Titanic Belfast, a six-story attraction that tells the story of the ill-fated ship, from its construction in Belfast to its tragic maiden voyage. A Black Cab tour of Belfast explores the city’s complex history, street art and political murals.

A full-day tour from Belfast to the Causeway Coast features a crossing of Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge for spectacular views of the rugged coastline and swirling Atlantic waters below. Then visit Giant’s Causeway, famous for its interlocking basalt columns. Cap off the day with a tour and tasting at Old Bushmills Distillery, the world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery, founded in 1608.

The journey continues to County Sligo, a region known for its stunning landscapes and literary heritage. Dinner and overnight is in stately Markree Castle, an imposing residence and country house hotel. After breakfast, enjoy free time to explore the historic estate set on 800 acres of unspoiled parkland along the River Unsin.

Next on the agenda is the lively town of Galway, celebrated for its arts scene, traditional music and coastal charm. You have free time in time in the afternoon to explore the colorful streets and quaint shops. After breakfast the next day, set out on a food tour of Galway, sampling regional specialties—from seafood to cheeses—at markets, bakeries and artisanal producers.

Cliffs of Moher

Cliffs of Moher

The trip from Galway to Kerry passes through some of Ireland’s most iconic landscapes. A stop in the charming town of Lisdoonvarna provides time to stroll its peaceful streets and drop into one of its traditional pubs or cafes. Continue to the Cliffs of Moher, which offer breathtaking views of the Atlantic coastline. The Cliffs of Moher ranked No. 1 in Conde Nast Traveler’s list of “Nine Gorgeous Cliff Views That Rival the Grand Canyon.”

Next is County Kerry and the scenic Dingle Peninsula. Home to some of the finest coastal scenery in Ireland, the peninsula is renowned for its Celtic and pre-Christian monuments, early Chirstian churches and strong preservation of traditional Irish language and customs—Irish is still spoken as a first language in the region. You’ll have time to walk through Dingle, a charming village with brightly colored buildings, narrow streets and a lively harbor.

In Cork, visit legendary Blarney Castle and kiss the Blarney Stone before heading back to Dublin for a day at leisure followed by a farewell dinner.

Athens, Mykonos & Santorini: Greek Islands Explorer

Beginning and ending in Athens, this 10-day odyssey features the best of the Greek Islands. After getting settled in your hotel, follow the beach-fringed Aegean coastline to Cape Sounion, where the ancient Temple of Poseidon rises dramatically above the sea. As the sun sets, stroll the rocky cape and soak in the views before enjoying dinner on the waterfront.

Touring Athens the next day, you’ll visit the picturesque Plaka district with its maze of cobblestone streets lined with shops and market stalls. After lunch there, proceed to the ruins of the Ancient Agora, once the center of Athenian democracy. Next, make a short stop at the stadium where the first modern Olympic games were held in 1896 before heading to the Acropolis, where you will cast your eyes on the Parthenon and other architectural masterpieces of the Golden Age of Athens. Admire archaeological treasures at the New Acropolis Museum and have dinner in its restaurant.

From Athens, your Goway gang takes a high-speed ferry to the postcard-perfect island of Santorini. Start with a walking tour of Oia, famous for its whitewashed buildings and blue-domed churches. Continue to Fira, the lively capital, where cliffside cafes offer breathtaking views, and explore its winding streets in the evening at your own pace.

Santorini is one of the most photographed of all the Greek islands.

Santorini is one of the most photographed of all the Greek islands.

The next day on Santorini is highlighted by visits to Akrotiri Excavation Site, the so-called “Prehistoric Pompei” or “Lost Atlantis;” the traditional villages of Megalochori and Pyrgos; panoramic views of the island from its highest peak, Profitis Ilias Mountain; and Black Beach, one of the longest black sand beaches in the Cyclades and Santorini’s most popular beach. Finish the day with sunset sips at a winery and learn about one of the oldest vineyards in Europe. The final day is devoted to sampling wines and meeting winemakers at several vineyards.

On the island of Mykonos, a three-hour ferry ride from Santorini, your first day includes a walk along the seafront and visits to the antique-filled Folklore Museum and one of the most photographed spots in the Mediterranean—Paraportiani Church. The pretty area of Alefkandra, known as the Little Venice of Mykonos, features gorgeous old houses perched precariously on the edge of the sea. The neighborhood is a popular place for artists to set up their workshops. Standing guard by the harbor are the iconic windmills of Mykonos. End the afternoon at a tavern for a sampling of Greek meze, including dips, olives, feta cheese and tomatoes.

The next day’s tour on Mykonos spotlights the village of Ano Mera, known for its wind production and a town square filled with taverns. There will be wine tasting and a selection of meze at a traditional farm. A Greek cooking class followed by lunch highlights the last day on the island.

After a ferry ride back to Athens, the rest of the day is at leisure. Perhaps you’ll spend it exploring the bustling streets of Monastiraki, relaxing over Greek coffee at a cafe or shopping for keepsakes of your Goway adventure in Greece.
