Escaping to a more rural and relaxing vacation spot is a dream for most city folks. South Dakota is an ideal state for this vacation idea with its mix of landscapes, rolling prairies and rugged peaks. Take a look at these popular but lesser-known locations for the best family vacation.

Black Hills, SD

Home to the famous Mount Rushmore, the Black Hills offer over five million acres of forest and mountain land to explore. The Black Hills have been a staple in South Dakota for travelers who enjoy the great outdoors. Wind Cave

Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota

Just an hour away, your group can experience the natural environments of South Dakota at Wind Cave National Park. Protecting both the underground earth and above-ground earth, Wind Cave is one of America’s oldest national parks and a great location to visit if you want to get closer to nature. Travelers can take tours to explore South Dakota’s great caves or view the symbolic bison on a soothing walk. The cultural significance of this national park comes from the Lakota tradition, where the first humans and bison came from the cave. Wind Cave is in the process of becoming an International Dark Sky Park for the sake of allowing visitors to enjoy the natural light it has to offer. Glacial Lakes & Prairies Region

The Glacial Lakes region is located in the northeast corner of South Dakota and is characterized by many lakes formed by glacial activity. It’s a great hub for not only nature exploration but outdoor activities such as fishing, boating and birdwatching. Some notable lakes in the area would be Big Stone Lake, a popular spot for camping and picnicking with native forests and various hiking trails and Roy Lake ,best for fishing and beachy afternoons. For historical experiences, there’s a rich native american history and culture with multiple opportunities to learn about the Sisseton Wahpeton Tribe before colonization. The Prairies Region consists of a vast and diverse landscape encompassing four national grasslands. It’s a mix of beauty and history and is known for its picturesque rolling hills andserene lakes. This is where you can explore the historical Native American sites while participating in outdoor activities. These locations aren’t as popular to tourists but have been coming up as a gem to South Dakota.
