The Creation of the Bellingrath Gardens

Bellingrath Gardens and Home was the creation of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bellingrath. The Gardens first opened to the public on April 7, 1932. Mr. Bellingrath placed an ad in the Mobile paper, announcing that anyone who would like to see the Spring Gardens could do so free of charge. After an overwhelming response, the couple decided to keep the Gardens open year-round, beginning in 1934.

Bellingrath was one of the first Coca-Cola bottlers in the Southeast, and with his wealth, built the estate garden and home. He and his wife, Bessie, lived in the home which has since been converted into a museum.

The gardens opened to the public in 1932. The site was listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on September 14, 1977, and on the National Register of Historic Places on October 19, 1982.
