Travel plans disrupted by the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland point to the necessity of trip cancellation insurance, writes guest columnist John Martinen. “Unfortunately for thousands of travelers without trip cancellation insurance, a staggering amount of personal funds was lost.”

Martinen guides travel planners through the group travel insurance maze. The traditional benefit package, he says, reimburses the traveler if he or she cancels the trip for reasons (such as a medical condition or death of a loved one) covered by the insurance. A “cancel for any reason” plan, available to Leisure Group Travel readers with Our Travel Protector, reimburses you for 75 percent of non-refundable trip costs if you decide to cancel the trip at least two days before departure. The reason for canceling is not important.
