Set to launch in December 2018, the ms Nieuw Statendam will be Holland America Line’s second Pinnacle-class ship. A sister ship to the ms Koningsdam, the Nieuw Statendam reflects the company’s evolution. After cruising roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean in winter and early spring months, she will then cross the Atlantic Ocean and offer Northern Europe and Mediterranean cruises during summer and fall. Accommodating 2,660 guests, the Nieuw Statendam is 99,500 gross-register tons. She brings sophisticated decor, light-filled spaces and beautiful interiors inspired by the fluid curves of musical instruments
Her design is similar to the Koningsdam, but the Nieuw Statendam also has exclusive public spaces that have been created by designer and architect Bjorn Storbraaten along with leading hospitality designer Adam D. Tihany.
Reimagined Stateroom Categories
The Nieuw Statendam has eight more staterooms than the Koningsdam, and these include five additional ocean-view staterooms along with three more interior staterooms, for a total of 1,339 staterooms. Onboard are 103 ocean-view staterooms and 280 interior staterooms, ranging from 225 to 266 square feet. The Nieuw Statendam also has 851 veranda or veranda spa accommodations. There are also 32 family ocean-view staterooms that have been reconfigured to feature more living space. The family ocean view staterooms, which can accommodate up to five guests, include two bathrooms and extra closet space. Located on the forward main deck are 12 single ocean-view staterooms for solo cruisers, and these range from 127 to 172 square feet.
Suite Accommodations
Suites onboard the Nieuw Statendam are larger and more luxurious. The Pinnacle Suite is now 1,290 square feet and has been reconfigured to have an open-concept design. It has a bedroom, living room, dressing room, dining area and private veranda with whirlpool. Forty-three Neptune Suites and two Neptune Spa Suites range from 465 to 855 square feet, and guests in these accommodations as well as those in the Pinnacle Suite have access to the Neptune Lounge. This private area lets guests relax while socializing with other suite guests and enjoying the services of a concierge and refreshments during the day.
Diverse Dining Venues
Dive-In provides al fresco dining by the pool featuring signature burgers, grilled chicken breast sandwiches and more, while New York Pizza & Deli has fresh salads and pizzas. Lido Market lets guests enjoy casual dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner with themed stations.
Grand Dutch Café, which is a la carte, provides coffee drinks and Dutch snacks. Gelato, also a la carte, provides gelato in a variety of flavors.
The elegant Dining Room provides breakfast, lunch and dinner options, from classic favorites to dishes inspired by the regions visited. (This is one of the included dining options onboard.)
Specialty alternative dining options include the Pinnacle Grill, which features dishes inspired by America’s Pacific Northwest (with a surcharge of $35 per person). Rudi’s Sel de Mer is another restaurant option. If guests want authentic Italian cuisine, Canaletto is a terrific option ($15 surcharge). Tamarind features culinary traditions of China, Japan and Southeast Asia, with menus created by Master Chef Rudi Sodamin ($25 surcharge).
Holland America Line’s Esteemed Culinary Council
The extraordinary culinary experience offered onboard Holland America Line’s ships is due to its Culinary Council, which includes seven top chefs from around the world. Rudi Sodamin is Culinary Council chairman. Other chefs include Jonnie Boer, the leading force behind De Librije, a regional fine dining restaurant that has earned a three-star Michelin rating each year since 2004, and David Burke, a pioneer of American cuisine. Others are Elizabeth Falkner, who has earned accolades for her San Francisco shop, Citizen Cake, and Andy Matsuda, founder of the Sushi Chef Institute in Southern California. Ethan Stowell, who’s changed the face of Seattle’s food scene with his impressive roster of acclaimed restaurants, and Jacques Torres, a French-trained Master Chef and artisan chocolatier, also are the part of the Culinary Council.
Nightlife and Entertainment
Guests enjoy diverse entertainment options onboard the Nieuw Statendam. World Stage, a two-story, state-of-the-art theater, features a 270-degree wraparound LED screen. Lincoln Center Stage presents outstanding live chamber music performances, while Billboard Online has live musicians performing 50 years of top chart hits. The popular B.B. King’s Blues Club has a new “Music Walk” experience. Also, guests can blend their own wine at BLEND by Chateau Ste. Michelle. Movies Poolside and the casino provide more entertainment.
Diverse Itineraries
On December 5, 2018, the Nieuw Statendam will depart from Civitavecchia (Rome) on a 14-day transatlantic crossing to Fort Lauderdale, where she’ll spend winter and spring. Her itineraries roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale include three- and four-day Bahamas sailings, seven-day Western and Eastern Caribbean sailings, and one 10-day Southern Caribbean cruise. All Caribbean cruises will include a call at Half Moon Cay, Holland America’s private Bahamian island.
After her inaugural season sailing in the Caribbean, the Nieuw Statendam in late April 2019 will cross the Atlantic Ocean for summer and fall sailings in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. While homeported in Amsterdam during the summer, she’ll offer a collection of seven- and 14-day itineraries to the Norwegian Fjords, Baltic, Iceland and North Cape. In September 2019 the Nieuw Statendam will head to the Mediterranean on a 12-day cruise from Amsterdam to Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy. From there, she’ll make three 10-day cruises to the Eastern and Western Mediterranean. And on October 27, 2019, the Nieuw Statendam will depart Civitavecchia on a 14-day cruise back to Fort Lauderdale.
