Bright lights and big celebrations steeped in generations of tradition provide memory-making itinerary ideas for December group trips south of the Mason-Dixon.
Parades, tours and outdoor illuminations highlight the season.
In Kentucky, The Galt House in Louisville this year introduces KaLightoscope, a huge display of larger-than-life, lighted holiday sculptures inspired by ancient Chinese art, all inside a temperature-controlled pavilion. East Tennessee’s Smoky Mountain Winterfest features lighted displays in Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville, while Magical Night of Lights at Georgia’s Lake Lanier Islands Resort is billed as the world’s largest animated light extravaganza. Other holiday hotspots are Biltmore House in Asheville, N.C., and Celebration in the Oaks at City Park in New Orleans.
