Wisconsin Tourism Secretary Wins International Award
Wisconsin Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett has been recognized as one of 45 “Top Women in Travel” by Women in Travel and Tourism International. She is one of four female tourism professionals around the world being recognized in the category of destination management and marketing.
The Wisconsin Department of Tourism has scored a number of successes during Klett’s six years in the office. During her tenure the state’s $20 billion tourism industry has grown by 35 percent. Initiatives undertaken under Klett’s leadership include reopening welcome centers at entrances to the state and a statewide customer service program that has trained more than 14,000 frontline travel employees to date. The Tourism Department has managed to enlist celebrities, including basketball legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Green Bay Packer Jordy Nelson, UW men’s basketball coach Bo Ryan, and actors Henry Winkler and Tony Shalhoub, to star in its TV ads. Marketing and public relations awards for the department, many of them international and national, are nearing 100.
Klett is a former Miss Beloit and Miss Wisconsin, who for nearly two decades hosted Discover Wisconsin television and radio programs. She is a graduate of Beloit College.
