I was reminded just last week of this very important truth while I was collecting my notes following one of my 6:30 a.m. Early Morning Marketing Cafe Meetings. In my world, the reminder often comes from my take on life as witnessed from behind the podium. In your world, it often comes from sitting behind a desk or while talking on the phone. For some of you it comes from walking in and out of strange office buildings and for just about everybody it comes directly from our goings and comings from our very own homes.
Believe it or not ... like it or not ... people are watching you and how you respond to everyday stimulus. They are making judgment calls following just about everything you do or say. I'll say it again, "People are watching you." You do make a difference although you may not feel like you are being heard, seen or appropriately responded to. I know this is true and I was reminded of this once again last week following one of my programs. A gentleman approached me and shared a "life-changing" story that included me in the contribution department. Apparently following a speech I gave a year a go, I hit on a couple of points that helped turn things around for him. In my world, this is both flattering and humbling. I do not take this "position" lightly. But you are in the very same position. People are always watching you and taking cues from your behavior and reactions. This makes you a "public figure" although you never thought of yourself as such. This places a lot of responsibility on your shoulders from the time you wake up to the moment you turn out your evening lamp. Believe it or not, like it or not, these are the facts. Don't blow it for yourself. But perhaps just as important, don't blow it for those who have chosen to look up to you. I remember watching a television interview of basketball celebrity Charles Barkley. He was reminded that he was a role model for the kids. He bluntly refused this to be the case as he flatly said, "I am not a role model." My point. YOU too are being watched whether you like it or not. Make it your business to be the person worth watching. Click on this link to receive last minute Summer Session details:
