New Fall Gardening School at Callaway Gardens

Learn from Experts on How to Make Fall Gardening Successful

Callaway Gardens, located in beautiful Pine Mountain, Ga. is hosting a brand new Fall Gardening School September 17, 18, and 19, 2010.  Callaway’s  horticulturists will play host to an informative, fun-filled weekend jam-packed with gardening experiences.

Callaway Gardens tourBring your group and be prepared to take home an abundance of gardening knowledge and completed gardening projects. You’ll have the plants you’ll need to get you started on your cool-season vegetable garden, herb garden, next Summer’s annuals and perennials and much more.

Register for the all of the activities at the value package price of $225 and receive a certificate of school completion. Or, pick and choose the programs and classes in which to participate. If you don’t already have a green thumb, don’t be surprised if you have a one by the end of the weekend!

Friday, September 17 – 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Planting your Fall Cool Season Vegetable Garden with David Chambers

Mr. Cason’s Vegetable Garden Manager, David Chambers, is truly a vegetable garden guru. David has been gardening for over 35 years and knows what works and what doesn’t. He will share his extensive knowledge on the best Fall crops and you’ll be able to take home enough to get you started on your cool season vegetable plot.

Individual Fee: $45

4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Break and Room Check-In

6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. – Get-Acquainted Reception at Mr. Cason’s Vegetable Garden

Spend time with the gardening experts in a relaxing atmosphere with light hors d’oeuvres and cash bar.

Saturday, September 18 -0 9:30 a.m. – Noon

Topiary Wreath for Fall and the Holidays with Sheila Kanotz

Join Sheila Kanotz, Callaway Gardens’ John A. Sibley Horticultural Center Manager for this hands-on workshop. Learn how to create a stuffed topiary with cold-hardy succulents that can be displayed for the Fall and/or Winter and last through the year. The versatile wreath can be changed out or added to for each season, used as a table-top decoration and suitable for any number of festive occasions to enjoy indoors or out.

Individual Fee: $40

11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. – Lunch (on your own)

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. – How and When to Plant Woody Plants and Perennials with Helen Phillips

Helen Phillips, from Garden Solutions in LaGrange, Georgia, is a former curator of The Victory Garden South in Mr. Cason’s Vegetable Garden at Callaway Gardens. In this hands-on workshop, an area of The Victory Garden will be replanted in a new design using woody shrubs and perennials to achieve a low maintenance garden with year-round appeal. Correct planting methods for gardening success will be explained and demonstrated…and then practiced!

2:45 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. – Cool Color! – Kerry Smith

Kerry Smith, Home Grounds team Co-leader in the Alabama Cooperative Extension System will talk about Fall and Winter color in the garden. Face it…we’ve long since retired indoors when August arrives. Let’s get back out there and enjoy the beauty of cool season color – in your landscape, walking in the woods or driving down the highway.

Individual Fee: $25

3:45 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Herbs for you Winter Garden with Patricia Collins

Take home a planter with some herbs that will keep you cooking throughout the Winter with fresh garden herbs. Recipes included.

Individual Fee: $35

6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. – Southern Buffet

Gather at the end of the day for good food and to compare notes with fellow participants and get your last-minute questions answered from the Gardening School speakers.

Sunday, September 19 – 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Keeping your plants going through the Winter: Plant Propagation – Brian Kanotz

Bring your favorite pair of snips or pruners and join Brian Kanotz, Callaway Gardens Greenhouse Production Manager for this hands-on workshop. Learn to take cuttings of your favorite tender perennials and annuals and keep them alive for next Summer. Attendees may bring in their own plant material if they desire. The rest of the workshop time will be spent in the greenhouse production and Sibley Horticultural Center areas taking cuttings from the plants there.
