Colonial MexicoColumnist Marty Sarbey de Souto suggests fashioning a group itinerary that includes the charming historical towns away from beachside standbys like Acapulco and Cancun. She asserts that if travelers have not been to “the lovely interior towns of the Spanish colonial region, then they haven’t really seen Mexico.”

Touring Mexico’s Colonial Circuit, she says, can begin or end in Guadalajara, the country’s second city. Other towns would include Morelia, Pátzcuaro, Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende. Travelers will enjoy the cobblestone streets and shopping for artisan wares like pottery, glassware and embroidered linens.
