Outdoor Odysseys Although travelers flock here to experience the history of America’s beginning as a nation, visitors to New England should also take advantage of its beautiful natural landscape. With thousands of acres of national and state parks, forests and seashores, the region provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors . MAINE Acadia National Park in Maine is the only national park in all of New England. Acadia offers a variety of ranger-led tours and programs, including tours that will take you along the scenic Park Loop Road to the top of Cadillac Mountain. The tallest mountain along the East Coast (1,530 feet) affords impressive views of Porcupine Islands and Frenchman Bay. In addition to hiking, bicycling, boating and other outdoor activities, discover Islesford Historical Museum, Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, Sieur de Monts Spring Area and the Wild Gardens of Acadia, where 12 plant communities are represented on less than one acre. Stop at Jordan’s Pond House for the century-long tradition of tea and popovers. Just minutes away from the park, enjoy fine dining, shopping and various attractions in quaint Bar Harbor. Another coastal landmark is Camden Hills State Park, the largest state park on Maine’s coast. Sitting atop Mount Battie, Camden Hills is located just north of Camden, a classic New England town with inviting shops, eateries, harbor cruises, and whale and puffin watches. VERMONT Active travelers will love a stop at Green Mountain National Forest, which spans the Green Mountain Range from the Massachusetts border to Bristol. With 350,000 acres of wilderness, this forest comprises 50 percent of Vermont’s public land. Both the Appalachian Trail, a 2,155- mile-long trail from Georgia to Maine, and the Long Trail, a 256- mile trail extending the length of Vermont, run through the forest. From birding to berry-picking, from camping to canoeing, the six wilderness areas at Green Mountain National Forest make it the ideal place to experience everything Vermont’s outdoors has to offer. The bustling city of Rutland is conveniently located nearby and offers numerous cultural and recreational attractions, plus a variety of accommodations. Read More
