Shreveport, La.’s Sci-Port Discovery Center has added 25,000 feet of exhibit space for its brand-new $11.6 million Space Dome Planetarium. Open to the public Nov. 18, the center includes a two-story Foucault pendulum (which proves with its rotated swing pattern that the Earth rotates), a Solarium with sundial that also serves as a skylight, and 90 other exhibits that are separated into seven clustered themes highlighting different facets of astronomy, space science and applied mathematics. The themes are: Exploring Space, the Solar System, the Sky, Flight, Deep Space, Go Figure and Measure Up. The last two themes feature thirty exhibits and focus on applied mathematics.
The hands-on exhibit features navigation stations that allow visitors to dock a shuttle at the International Space Station or turn back the clock to see the position of the stars on the day of their birth. The planetarium can also set up workshops and demonstrations for groups. With the new wing,Sci-Port now measures 92,000 square feet. For more information, call 877-724-7678 or visit www.sciport.org.
