Day 1 – Dixon & Oregon
Your first stop in historic downtown Dixon will be Baker’s Street for a light breakfast. Relax with Baker’s Street’s in-house roasted coffees and espressos or enjoy café mocha, hot chocolate or chocolate chia tea along with chocolate scones, muffins and/or a piece of delicious quiche. Pick from any of the tempting chocolate offerings or try one of their three signature specialties – choose from their 14- Layer Cinnamon Torte – 14 layers of delectable cinnamon with an exquisite chocolate filling piled with chocolate curls on top; the rich Bavarian cake – a chocolate cake made with a Bavarian fruit filling and finished with a chocolate drizzle; or a beautiful Chocolate Ganache filled and topped in rich chocolate.
Walk down the block to the Crystal Cork Wine Shoppe in Dixon which offers wonderful chocolate ports and chocolate martinis. Their knowledgeable staff will assist as you learn to pair wine with chocolate. Other options include a chocolate wine tasting and a chocolate martini sampling.
Travel north along scenic Illinois Route 2, which follows the Rock River to the next stop on your chocolate adventure – Conover Square Mall in Oregon. Built in 1893, the mall was originally the home of the Schiller Piano Factory, which has been converted into a unique shopping experience with a variety of distinctive shops.
Enjoy lunch at Conover Coffees & Chocolates Cafe, where, along with delicious sandwiches and soups, you’ll find chocolate truffles, meltaways, nuts and caramels, and their gourmet bridge mix. Mixed in with your familiar favorites, you’ll find one very rare and extraordinary ingredient – their 100% pure chocolate passion. Conover Coffees & Chocolates offers more than 70 different kinds of chocolate indulgences along with gourmet blends of coffees, teas and smoothies.
Travel a short distance to Oregon Soap Shoppe where the CHOCOLATE GOODIES have some very important features – they are 100% guilt-free, 100% calorie-free, oh so very good for you and only mildly “habit forming.” Choose from their many specialty soaps of delicious chocolate varieties or any of the other 150-plus blends to really nurture the skin you are in.
After a day of indulging in chocolate, drive along the Rock River and check in at the Paddle Wheel Inn. If you choose, you can enjoy a scenic view of the Rock River from one of their Riverview rooms. They will provide the chocolate lover with a variety of chocolate treats in your room upon arrival.
After checking in, go across to Maxson’s Riverside Restaurant for an upscale dinner complete with salad bar and their signature orange rolls. You can also stroll along the Rock River or book an evening cruise on the Pride of Oregon Paddlewheel Boat where you’ll find plenty of chocolate surprises on their dessert menu.
Day 2 – Oregon & Mount Morris
After a refreshing night’s sleep you’ll travel to downtown Oregon where you’ll enjoy breakfast at Robinz Nest Cafe featuring their specialty chocolate chip pancakes and premium blend coffees, teas and lattes.
In historic downtown Oregon, an architectural delight, be sure to stop in The Eagles Nest, a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. If you have ever shopped out West you will LOVE what they have to offer. They feature Corral boots, handcrafted Native American jewelry, clothing, Minnetonka moccasins, artifacts, rustic furniture and much more.
A short distance up the street, Merlin’s Greenhouse & Flowers and The Other Side Boutique welcomes you to take time to browse and they always go out of their way to please. Every season is special and the beautiful home decor found throughout both stores, plus the clothing, jewelry and purses, makes it a fun experience.
Continue your trip 10 minutes west to White Pines Inn, located in beautiful White Pines Forest State Park, and enjoy a delicious buffet lunch with chocolate for dessert while you relax and enjoy a live theater production in the rustic, historic lodge. Chocolate lovers will delight in the gift shop’s assorted chocolates, truffles and myrtles.
Now you may depart for home, or delay your diet another day and extend your getaway with more chocolate experiences.
