Increasingly, conventions and meetings are looking to incorporate environmentally conscious elements into their events, and THETRADESHOW is no exception. From using recycled paper and environmentally friendly inks on printed pieces to recycling badge holders, THETRADESHOW is going green.

"As the travel industry becomes increasingly aware of the importance of being environmentally responsible on all fronts, it is incumbent upon us as industry leaders to take it to the next level. That means incorporating green initiatives every step of the way, from internal business practices to implementing broad-scale programs at major industry events such as THETRADESHOW," said Bill Maloney, CTC, ASTA executive vice president and COO. "We can't ask others to do what we are not willing to do ourselves."

Read more about some of the environmentally-conscious initiatives being put in place by THETRADESHOW.

Attendee Communications

* Whereas most communication with THETRADESHOW attendees is
electronic, on-site brochures and THESHOWBOOK will be printed on recycled paper using natural inks.

Exhibitor Communications and Trade Show

* Champion Nationwide Contractor, the show's decorator, is
printing all exhibitor signs on recycled materials using environmentally friendly ink.
* Through an electronic newsletter, exhibiting companies will be
encouraged to:
  • Make signs reusable for multiple meetings;
  • Print promotional materials on recycled papers with natural inks;
  • Purchase items from local vendors instead of shipping;
  • them across country or from overseas;
  • Keep additional lights in the booth to a minimum;
  • Turn off computers at the end of trade show hours.
* Exhibiting companies will be encouraged to rent lead retrieval
units to reduce the number of brochures brought on site thereby reducing carbon emissions related to shipping and wasted paper in the form of excess brochures.
* Exhibitors are encouraged to upload their company brochure or
flyer to their exhibitor listing on http://www.thetradeshow.org/. Not only do exhibitors receive more value and greater exposure but it allows them to cut back on the number of brochures distributed at the event itself, saving paper and reducing overall waste.
Lodging & Transportation
* THETRADESHOW will be encouraging people to walk, if possible, to
the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC), where most of the events are being held. The Peabody, Rosen Centre Hotel and the Rosen Plaza Hotel are within walking distance of the OCCC.
* Four of the event hotels—Rosen Centre, Portofino Bay, Royal
Pacific and Hard Rock Hotel—are all certified members of the Florida Green Lodging program.
As such:
  • Guests have the opportunity to recycle plastic bottles, newspapers, aluminum cans and office paper.
  • The hotels have a campus-wide energy management system, programmable thermostats and high-efficiency lighting help to conserve energy.
  • The hotels feature Energy Star-rated appliances, low-flow plumbing fixtures and a linen and terry re-use program help to conserve water.
  • Waste is reduced by recycling and purchasing items in bulk.

Orange County Convention Center

The OCCC is undertaking several green initiatives, including:

* Use of "Green Certified" cleaning products by Ecolution and ZEP.
* Building Services ISO 14001 Certification for Recycling efforts
and continual improvement.
* Pilot testing of touch-free air hand driers and soap and
hand-sanitizer dispensers.
* Pilot testing of recycled content toilet tissue and hand towels.
* Improved identification and usage of recycling receptacles.
